Ancient Greek architectural forms are precise, ordered and focus on creating a sense of beauty through proportion and balance. The latest collection, the Attalos lighting range by Marz® Designs plays on these characteristics and proportions. Featuring a solid brass base support with an oversized frosted bulb which appears to balance perfectly on top. So how did this design come to fruition?
Ancient Greek architecture not only profoundly affected early European architecture but it subtly continues to inform architects and designers today. Furthermore, we still see examples of Ancient Greek Architecture through both remains and reconstructions of its temples, amphitheatres, public spaces and monuments.
Exploring the precision and detailing of these ancient structures we were drawn to The Stoa of Attalos in Agora, Athens. This Stoa (a covered walkway) combines a range of the known Greek architectural orders into different areas of the space, but we simply couldn’t go past the large walkway of fluted columns. The repetition of these was almost rhythmical in nature and in particular the Doric fluting. This particular style of fluting to the column bases only seemed to further elongate the columns vertically.
“creating a sense of beauty through proportion and balance”
The Attalos lighting range is available as either a table lamp or as a suspended pendant light feature. Marz Designs has reinterpreted the traditional stone carving technique of fluting into a sculptural contemporary brass light fixture. With a solid brass base, like Ancient Greek architecture, the Attalos will remain timeless for years to come.
